John
M. Knox, Principal
A seasoned professional with more than 25 years of public relations
and marketing communications expertise, John founded Knox Communications
in 1989. His specialty is communications strategy and implementation
for clients in the health care industry.
Previously, John worked in the San Francisco office of Burson-Marsteller,
the world's largest public relations firm, receiving promotions
to senior account executive and account supervisor. While at Burson-Marsteller,
John was a member of the agency's worldwide health care network
and was responsible for management and growth of $800,000 in business,
including corporate, public affairs and marketing accounts.
Prior to Burson-Marsteller, John served as director of public relations
at St. Mary's Hospital and Medical Center in San Francisco, where
he created and implemented the first-ever overall public relations
plan for the city's largest private hospital. During his seven years
at St. Mary's, he counseled top management in communication strategy
on key issues such as AIDS and labor relations.
John's public relations, marketing and editorial experience also
includes newspaper reporting, book publishing and university public
affairs. His extensive client history ranges from not-for-profit
community agencies to Fortune 500 corporations.
In
recognition of John's professional abilities, he has earned numerous
awards from the Public Relations Society of America, the International
Association of Business Communicators and the Catholic Health Association.
He has served as an expert witness in civil litigation related to
health care marketing. His areas of expertise include strategic
communications planning and counseling, media relations, writing
and editing for print and on-line vehicles, community relations,
research, advertising, direct marketing and special events.
He has completed a number of post-graduate and continuing education
courses and holds a bachelor's degree in communications from the
University of California, Davis.
A fifth-generation San Francisco native, John is a past chairman
of the Public Relations Round Table and the Independent Communicators
Round Table. He is a volunteer with the American Cancer Society,
providing communications counsel to the California Division.
